Year of Discovery

Curriculum. We are developing 4 curriculum blocks:

  • Survival- students will learn about personal survival and the survival of industry and organisms in the Pacific Northwest
  • Cycles- students will study the cycles that the environment and living organisms go through in the Pacific Northwest
  • Energy- students will study how energy and energy needs effect humans, the environment, and other living organisms in the Pacific Northwest
  • Pacific Northwest Area Examination- students will study a specific area of the Pacific Northwest and its economy, environment, industry, recreation, etc.

Our focal point will be Furs, Gold, Timber, and Pacific Northwest development. Students will study the people that have lived in the Pacific Northwest and how they survived and thrived. The year will be called, “Year of Discovery”.

Take the lead with your education. Interested in environmental studies, but not quite sure you want the challenge of camping trips, field study and working on outdoor projects? No problem. At the start of each school year, the entire high school heads off on a camping trip that builds a friendly and supportive school community..

Field Program -- walk on the wild side. No other program travels as much, goes as far, or takes on more challenges than ODS. All Sophomore, Junior and Senior students spend half of each month tackling important conservation projects and participating in hands-on field study activities. With your Field Team, you also take off on a Wednesday to Wednesday “spike” trip twice a year to check-out outdoor recreation opportunities, tackle conservation projects, explore the Oregon environment and have a good time with new friends.

Freshman Program. Freshman will be placed in their own crew and spend more time in the classroom at the beginning of the year. They will slowly spend more and more time outdoors, working and learning in the Northwest Youth Corps garden, Hendricks Park and Mt. Pisgah. All Freshman will attend the first all school spike and then can choose to plan and participate in a freshman end of year spike.
