After School/Volunteer/Service Learning Coordinator

1 full time position, late August 2011 – June 2012

 

 

 

Program Description: 

Oakridge School District is located in the center of the Cascade Mountains, 45 minutes east of the Eugene-Springfield area. It serves the Oakridge-Westfir communities which currently host a population of approximately 5,000. Today, the school district is comprised of three schools - Oakridge Elementary School, Westridge Middle School and Oakridge High School. The district enrollment is approximately 600 with 310 students in grades K-6 at Oakridge Elementary, 100 students in grades 7&8 at Oakridge Junior High School and 190 students in grades 9-12 at Oakridge High School. Member serving in this position will work together with staff, students, parents and community to promote Oakridge School District standards of performance, positive attitudes, and productive behaviors, as they provide students with the best possible educational experience - an experience that will help nurture them for productive global citizenship.

 

Job Description:

AmeriCorps is the national service program engaging thousands of dedicated Americans to meet critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment.  Members receive a stipend towards living expenses and a voucher towards college tuition. This opportunity made possible through a grant awarded by the Oregon Commission for Voluntary Action and Service. Member will identify and develop volunteer opportunities with-in the district for parents and community members, and develop and implement after school enrichment curriculum with students (including special needs students). Activities may also be developed to be implemented on selected weekend evenings. Member assists in the development of service-learning projects for high school age youth.

 

Duties/Responsibilities: Essential Functions

¤         Help provide after school academic and enrichment activities for youth

¤         Lead youth in the safe & efficient completion of service projects

¤         Act as a role model & leader

Duties/Responsibilities: Secondary Functions

¤         Use conflict resolution skills & implement school’s disciplinary policy

¤         Prepare required daily & monthly paperwork

¤         Coordinate with staff and community to implement volunteer program

 

Desired Qualifications:

¤         One year of college education; undergraduate/graduate degree preferred

¤         Valid driver's license

¤         Experience teaching and/or leading youth, and ability to deal with a variety of youth behaviors

¤         Strong communication skills & a vested interest in community service

¤         Flexible personality to be able to deal with the unexpected

¤         Desire for personal challenge

 

Terms of service:  1 full time 40-45 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, or other times to be arranged. Tentative dates for this year are late August 2011 – June 2012, for a minimum of 1700 hours during a 10 month term. Program Benefits:  $12,100 living allowance dispersed evenly on a monthly basis, health insurance, vacation according to school calendar, and a $5,550 education award upon completion of at least 1,700 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable.  Members will also receive training in a variety of areas to help them complete and be successful in planned activities. Members are responsible for providing housing, food, and transportation to and from work. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal background check.
