Outdoor Opportunities for Local Teens

Mill City Independent Press
Mill City, Oregon
September 7, 2005

This Fall teens have the opportunity to travel, live and work outdoors with new friends, camp out, get into shape, and earn a $1,000 stipend plus bonuses! Through Northwest Youth Corps, teens aged 16-19, can hike trails, cook on dutch ovens, sleep under the stars and wake up to the sunrise in some of the most beautiful parts of the Pacific Northwest.

Youth will have a chance to build trails and turnpikes at the largest state park in Oregon, Silver Falls. Located in Oregon’s Siuslaw National Forest, Silver Falls provides something recreational for everyone. Teens will also reroute trails in the popular recreation sites of the Willamette National Forest. They will improve access to the trails for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders along Waldo Lake and throughout the Table Rock Wilderness.

Youth will construct retaining walls at the highest volcano in the Cascade range, Washington’s famous National Park, Mount Rainier. The work from NYC crews will benefit the 2 million people that come to visit this active volcano each year.

NYC participants will also construct bridges throughout some of Oregon’s State Parks. These are just a few of the numerous projects, that youth will have the opportunity to experience through NYC.

We are now accepting applications for our Fall program beginning September 17th Youth or parents can visit our website for complete program information and application instructions; www.northwestyouthcorps.org. They can also call our Youth Services Team at 349-5058 if they have questions. Interested youth should apply immediately.

NYC offers youth a challenging experience that combines the responsibilities of holding a job with a chance to work outside, helping protect and rehabilitate the environment. With Northwest Youth Corps (NYC), teens plunge into five weeks of challenge as they trade the comforts of home for tents, sleeping bags, and meals cooked over campfires and propane stoves. As NYC’s ten member crews tackle challenging and complex projects, crewmembers learn how to work as a team, communicate, cooperate, resolve conflicts and solve problems.

NYC programs emphasize teamwork and leadership. They promote education, personal growth and individual achievement. NYC is about youth meeting a challenge and discovering the pride that goes along with finishing what they start especially when it wasn’t easy.

“1 learned a lot about pushing myself and how to change for the better. When something wasn’t going well, I learned to turn it around into a learning experience. I’ve also learned how to work in a team better, and to communicate.” T.D.

Northwest Youth Corps is a non-profit organization established in 1984 in order to offer teenagers an education-based, work experience.

It’s a program that presents all teens, ranging in ages from 14-19. with challenges and opportunities. Modeled after the historic Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930’s, NYC has served more than 8,000 youth. The underlying theme of NYC programs is one of empowerment, giving youth the skills and confidence they need to face life’s challenges.
