New Oregon State Park

NYC to work on new Stub Stewart State Park in August 2005!

Located in Washington County, 31 miles northwest of Portland, Stub Stewart State Park will cover 1,800 acres of breathtaking wilderness that is perfect for camping, hiking, and horseback riding. The park will feature individual and group campgrounds, a 17-mile trail system, 15 rental cabins, and a hilltop day-use area with an observation tower for sightseeing and stargazing.

The Park is being constructed in the memory of L.L. “Stub” Stewart, a significant figure in Oregon government, history and economy during the second half of the twentieth century.

'Stub Stewart was a 1932 graduate of OSU, and along with his brother went on to lead Bohemia Lumber Co. near Cottage Grove. Stewart also served in the Legislature from 1951 to 1957 and is credited with passage of the landmark beach bill that maintains Oregon beaches as public property. In addition to serving on the state Board of Higher Education, he also served for 30 years on the state Parks and Recreation Commission.'

Stub's son, Steve Stewart, is also a strong supporter of Northwest Youth Corps crews --providing opportunities for youth to become involved in restoration and maintenance projects directly relating to Oregon’s economic and cultural history.

Youth will begin by helping to construct the Hiker campground, which consists of 22 individual campsites, a recreation lawn and overflow camp area, in addition to a communal meeting area and fire ring. They will begin prep work on the picnic shelter and the hiking trails within the Hiker campground area. Specific projects will include tent-pad construction, trail construction and brush clearing.
