Giving teens the tools to succeed

This summer, the ultimate backcountry training opportunity becomes a reality for forty teens enrolled in the Northwest Youth Corps Backcountry Leadership Program (BLP). This program offers training for teens interested in learning advanced skills or pursuing careers in fields such as outdoor recreation or natural resource management. Often, BLP participants go on to pursue outdoor leadership opportunities with youth programs, such as Northwest Youth Corps, and become the leaders and teachers for the next generation of youth. In other words, BLP trains our future leaders.

Northwest Youth Corps, with help from donors, provides the tools and equipment for this successful program – saws, loppers, pulaskis, hazel hoes, drills, levels, hammers, shovels, camp stoves, tents. NYC’s professional staff provides the other “tools” – experience, expertise, encouragement, and enthusiasm. And, the participants bring excitement, determination, and readiness to be a leader. BLP crewmembers learn to coordinate camp activities, present natural history lessons, and eventually accept all crew leadership responsibilities for an entire day. Crewmembers also learn to take charge of real backcountry work projects in places such as Idaho's Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and Washington's Glacier Peak Wilderness.

We are doubling the number of crews to enable more youth to benefit from this program. To do that, we need your help.
