Northwest Youth Corps becomes a reality for more youth

Each year, hundreds of teens from all backgrounds go on the adventure of a lifetime in a Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) program. Features of all NYC programs -- challenge, education, teamwork, and leadership -- have a significant positive impact on the lives of youth. Scholarships through NYC's Tuition Assistance Endowment help more youth to participate in NYC programs and benefit from this experience.

While most youth who apply for assistance live with parents or guardians, almost one in five come from foster care, are independent, or have no regular place to live. For example, one applicant was homeless and lived with his family in a car. Through a scholarship, this teen was able to participate in an NYC session, where he was able to join in team-based activities with other teens, learn job and life skills, earn a stipend, gain work experience, build his confidence, and feel pride from completing conservation projects.

The Northwest Youth Corps Tuition Assistance Endowment was established by Steve Stewart in memory of his mother, Dorothy Elizabeth Stewart, to empower youth to make a difference, learn new skills, and improve their lives. Each year, the Endowment continues to grow through the ongoing support of alumni and community members.

This year, the Endowment will generate as many as sixty scholarships for youth who could not otherwise afford to participate in an NYC program. However, these scholarships fulfill only a fraction of the requests for assistance. Funds for NYC scholarships are still needed.
