Making tracks down country roads

Crews travel to projects in new vehicles

In May 2006, Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) purchased eight new buses to transport youth to the field. The new vehicle features include rear dual wheels for enhanced safety and improved storage for better access to tools. Purchasing these new vehicles to replace older ones helps Northwest Youth Corps continue to provide the safest program possible.

The new vehicles sport giant lime-green footprints and the text 'challenge, education, teamwork, and leadership.' The text and graphics symbolize a few of the core elements of all NYC programs - challenge, education, teamwork, and leadership. Other text, 'Leave your footprint on the world' and 'blazing trails, making tracks,' tells of the legacy of environmental stewardship and exciting outdoor adventure.

This year, these new buses will carry more than 200 youth and staff to project sites throughout Oregon and Washington. Crews will enhance the New River Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) just south of Bandon, completing trail maintenance and meadow restoration for the Coos Bay BLM. Another high visibility project is NYC trail work for the Eugene-Pacific Crest Trail (EPCT), to connect Eugene to the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from Canada to Mexico. Crews will also cool off this summer, rafting across the McKenzie River to remove noxious weeds and enhance habitat on Rodman Island. Other crews are heading to the Mount Baker Ranger District in the Mount-Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest to complete trail projects. Crews will also travel to Beazell Memorial Forest to construct new trail, to Aumsville County Park to build two bridges and an observation deck, and to Stub Stewart State Park to complete new trail construction. Youth crews can look forward to additional projects at the Lewis and Clark National Historic Park, Olympic National Park, Salem BLM Table Rock Wilderness, and Mt. Rainier National Park.

The purchase of new buses is made possible through Travel Safe initiative funds. Major funders include Meyer Memorial Trust, Weyerhaeuser Community Foundation, Ben B. Cheney Foundation, McKay Family Foundation, Chambers Family Foundation, Woodard Family Foundation, Dolly and Don Woolley, and other individuals.
