Cottage Grove Day of Caring

Cottage Grove, Oregon
Day of Caring Community Volunteer Event

On April 28th, 2006, Lincoln Middle School in Cottage Grove, Oregon was the center for the 9th annual Day of Caring. Randi Mackley, NYC Cottage Grove Rural School AmeriCorps Member, logged more than 600 hours coordinating the event with 61 volunteers from the community, 44 AmeriCorps members, 509 students, and 6 staff from Cottage Grove Parks Department.

The volunteers performed more than 1,200 hours of work at 33 sites in Cottage Grove. Work included weeding, planting, graffiti clean up, litter pick up, and spreading bark under school play equipment and on jogging trails. Some volunteers visited elder care centers, where they read to seniors or joined in center activities. Even the sun showed up to provide a warm and sunny day for the event. At day's end, volunteers celebrated their accomplishments with with a barbeque and dance.

The City of Cottage Grove, along with many individuals and businesses supported the event with donations of labor and money, equipment, supplies, bark mulch, and plants. Each year, community support and involvement has increased, as more and more people see the positive impact that these youth and other volunteers are having in Cottage Grove. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success again this year.
