Junction City Pond Project

Popular Junction City, Oregon, Pond Gets Improvements

April 26, 2006
Junction City, Oregon

Soren Anderson, NYC Junction City Rural School AmeriCorps member, is leading an improvement project at Junction City Pond, a popular family fishing pond located three miles south of Junction City, Oregon. The pond receives thousands of visitors year-round, and is home to the oldest (20 years running) and largest youth fishing derby in the area. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) stocks the pond with trout.

The goal is to create a path that will cut down on erosion on the edge of the pond and create an area where outdoor enthusiasts and fitness groups will come and enjoy the scenery by walking the newly constructed pathway around the pond. The path will also provide better access for people of all abilities. The project was suggested by the students of Junction City High School. Already, after the first two weekends of work, students and volunteers have created a three-foot-wide gravel trail around more than half of the pond.

This project is a partnership between the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), the local Moose Lodge (youth fishing derby sponsor), Northwest Youth Corps (providing trail knowledge and tools), and the students of Junction City H.S. (the muscles). To date, Soren and his crew have received three truck loads of gravel for the project at half price and one truck load donated by Wildish Land Company. Wood and rebar have been donated for building retaining walls. Lunch for the students was donated by McDonalds of Junction City. Thanks to Wildish Land Company, Conser Quarry, Egge Sand & Gravel, and other donors and volunteers for their support of this project.
