Kingsford Donates $9,000 for Eugene Youth
More than 150 Lane County youth will be able to work, learn and play in the great outdoors this summer thanks to a generous donation from the Kingsford Manufacturing Plant located in Springfield, Oregon. On February 5th, five employees from Kingsford Manufacturing – the local Clorox affiliate – arrived at the Northwest Youth Corps campus to present a $9,000 check and learn more about NYC’s programs.
Kingsford’s generous donation came from the Clorox Company Foundation, which helps support charities in local communities. Their $9,000 will support the YouthWorks program by paying for staff wages and operational costs, helping keep the program affordable for Lane county youth. “This kind of help from the community is really what keeps our program going,” said Youthworks Program Director Jay Runte. “It is great to see how local donors see the value of teaching kids how to play and work in the outdoors.” Kingsford has a proud tradition of supporting NYC programs, having donated cooking briquettes since 1992.
Youthworks is one of NYC’s family of programs, designed to bring Lane County youth a summer of outdoor adventure, service learning and hands-on conservation experience. However, what makes YouthWorks unique is its payment of a stipend to each young member. After three weeks doing projects such as restoring the West Eugene Wetlands and exploring the Oregon coast, Corpsmembers go home with a heightened knowledge of the environment, themselves and the value of work. YouthWorks is an Americorps program open to all Lane County youth ages 11-15.
