GARDEN

Newsletter Garden Update

Very cold wet weather has slowed things down in the garden and the soil is napping under a blanket of city leaves.  Minimum low temperatures in the twenties forced us to cover much of what was left in the garden. Pulling the covers back we still had beets, cabbages, carrots and chard that were edible. In the greenhouse our winter lettuces held on and with a little more sun should be providing us with salads in a week or two. By mid February we will start seedlings in our newly completed grow room. Students from ODS are working specialty gardens; herb, tea, butterfly, wildflower and cutting gardens. Students will design, plant, maintain and market these gardens. Other students will be put in charge of the greenhouse, grow room, sun tunnel and field crops.

If you are interested in learning more about gardening join us for our Laurel Valley Educational Farm Workshops.  Our first workshop will be Sunday,  March 2, 10 am to 2 pm at the farm. Cost is $5.  The workshop is on plant propagation or “Make more of me and spread me out as far as I can go.” For those of you who have read Michael Pollen’s “Botany of Desire” you already know that our “niche” is to help plants meet their biological imperative, we will give you the tools to do your job.

Community Garden Plots are available in March! We have twelve 10’ x 10’ plots available for those who want to garden and don’t have the space or the sun to do it at home.  Plots are $20 for the year.
