In January, 2008, a team of ten AmeriCorps members led by a full-time Youth Corps staff member will form the Special Response Team whose efforts will focus on disaster preparedness, safety education, community outreach and conservation projects throughout the northwest. Learn more. The Program Coordinator supervises up to 5 crews at one time; crews consist of 10 participants and 2 staff. Crews live and work outdoors, often in remote and wild settings, spending 5-6 weeks completing conservation projects. In addition, crews participate in an experiential-based environmental and life skills education curriculum. Weekends are spent participating in recreation outings and crew re-supply. Learn more. Continued Job Description info: Come Join the High Uintas Wilderness Team! The Ashley National Forest High Uintas Wilderness Trail Crew is seeking to hire 2 experienced Trail Crew Bosses for the 2008 field season. Positionsrun from mid-June to early September. Trail Crew Bosses lead and work alongside a busy trail crew. Performs the full range of trail construction and maintenance activities non-motorized trails, often in very remote areas. This is a fun job working outdoors in the beautiful Uinta Mountains, but it’s physically strenuous and requires frequent heavy lifting, hiking several miles each day with 40-60 lbs, and work in high altitudes, mountain weather, and rugged terrain. Must also have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in the backcountry for extended periods. Experience with pack stock is a plus. Forest Service will provide equipment and training. Housing, subsistence, and mileage (if applicable) are provided. Located in northeastern Utah, the High Uintas Wilderness comprises the wild core of the massive Uinta Mountains. Characterized by the highest peaks in Utah, countless lakes, and a unique alpine ecosystem, it is among the nation’s most outstanding wilderness areas. At 456,705 acres in size, the High Uintas is the largest federal wilderness in the state of Utah. The main crest of the Uinta Mountains runs west to east for more than 60 miles, rising over 6,00 feet above the Wyoming and Uinta Basins to the north and south. Massive secondary ridges extend north and south from the crest of the range, framing glacial basins and canyons far below This rugged expanse of peaks and flat-top mountains is the largest alpine area in the Intermountain West and is the setting for Kings Peak, the highest peak in Utah. Hundreds of picturesque lakes, streams, and meadows lie within sculpted basins. Cold, clear rivers plunge from the basins into deep canyons that form the headwaters of Utah’s major rivers. An extensive network of trails (545 miles) leads visitors deep into the wilderness, through thick forests, past rushing streams and placid lakes, to sweeping alpine vistas below majestic peaks.
