Common Questions

What is the YouthWorks Outdoor Explorations Program?
NYC programs are developed from our many years of experience working outdoors with youth.  NYC designed YouthWorks to provide unique, fun filled outdoor activities emphasizing environmental awareness, teamwork, friendship, fun and community service especially for ages 11-15.  YouthWorks assigns two adult leaders to each crew of eleven youth to ensure the safest, most engaging experience possible.

What Will I be Doing?
If you are ages 11-13, you will be part of the "The Explorers".  The Explorers will experience the outdoors, enjoy every minute of every day, and learn about the importance of community service through special volunteer projects for non-profit organizations and public spaces.  Throughout each session youth will explore many things and oh, the places they'll go! The Explorers will learn the importance of making friends, discovering the world around them, teamwork, and leadership.

There will be various exciting field trips including whitewater rafting, a trip to the Pacific Ocean, adventurous hikes, and days spent in NYC’s, Laurel Hill Organic Farm learning about seeds and weeds, roots and shoots, tubers and tomatoes, compost and why we love ladybugs!

If you are ages 14-15, you will be part of "The Ventures".  The Ventures will experience a program designed specifically for their interests and age.  Youth will work on high priority trail and conservation projects directed toward community contribution with a service learning component. Service learning in the YouthWorks program focuses on purposeful learning through experiential education with efforts to improve and assist the local community through service and partnerships with agencies such as the Army Corps of Engineers, BLM, USFS, and local watershed councils.

Every participant in Session 1 &2  will go on our overnight camping trip!

What Will I Earn?
Life lessons, community service, and adventurous outings all add to the quality and uniqueness of The Explorers program.  To top it all off for Sessions 1 &2, each a 3 week session, fully completed by a Corpsmember, they will earn a stipend of $50.  Due to the 4J/Springfield School start date, Session 3 is only 2 weeks in length.  Tuition for Session 3 will be $265 and for each Corpsmember who fully completes Explorers Session 3, there will be a $25 stipend.

For The Ventures, it's not all work and no play! There is the forest, the coast, whitewater rafting, camping and farming.  All activities are designed to create self-confident young leaders with new friends and big adventures.

For Sessions 1 &2, each 3 week sessions, fully completed, The Ventures will earn a $75 Stipend.  Session 3 is 2 weeks in length and the stipend for full completion is $38.  Session 3 does not include an overnight trip.

Do I Need to Have Any Special Training or Experience?
No, you do not.  YouthWorks will give you an opportunity to learn everything you need to know to have fun and get the most out of every day.

What Should I Wear?
You will be notified in advance about community service days.  On those days, you must always wear blue jeans, a long sleeved blue work shirt, sturdy shoes or work boots, and a pair of work gloves.  NYC will provide the appropriate safety gear such as hard hats, or life vests.

What Are the Hours?
Each YouthWorks session is three weeks long from Monday to Friday.  You must arrive at NYC headquarters each weekday by 8:45am.  The day ends at 3:45 pm in to time to catch the 3:50 bus.

What About Lunch?
YouthWorks team members will need to bring a bag lunch with them every day.  Although each team will always have drinking water available, your own water bottle is highly recommended.  In addition, a snack will be served every day.

Tuition Questions
Tuition for Session 1 &2 is $395 per session, which is approximately $26 per day. Participants in The Ventures program will earn a stipend of $75 for full completion and those in The Explorers program will earn a stipend of $50 for full completion. Sessions 1 &2 are both 3 weeks in length.  Due to the 4J/Springfield school start date, Session 3 is two weeks in length.  Tuition for Session 3 is $265 and the YW stipend for Explorers in Session 3 is $25.
