Q: What is AmeriCorps?
A: AmeriCorps as a whole engages more than 75,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet community needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other human needs areas. AmeriCorps is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America.
AmeriCorps State and National members serve under the National and Community Service Trust Act. They provide direct service to communities and receive up to 20% of their service hours in development and training. Full time members serve 1700 hours in a 10-12 month period and receive a living allowance, health care, child care (if eligible) and upon completion of service, an Education Award of $4,725. Members serving in a less than full-time capacity receive reduced benefits.
