Northwest Youth Corps AmeriCorps Army Corps of Engineers Corps Member - Assistant to Project Botanist

The corps member will assist the project Botanist and other natural resource management personnel in the implementation of upland prairie restoration and management activities at Willamette Valley Projects, a 13 lake system of dams and reservoirs in the southern Willamette Valley.  The crew member will assist in plant propagation and planting, conducting field surveys to collect data on such items as rare, threatened and endangered plant populations, monitoring success of restoration plantings, and will assist in coordinating and directing the work of small youth crews.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform assigned tasks in the natural resources stewardship program at the 13 dams of the Willamette Valley Projects with special emphasis on ecological restoration of native prairies.
  • Perform or support botany and wildlife inventory; monitoring; management; and ecological restoration projects.
  • Identify plants and animals using technical keys and references.
  • Collect seeds, propagate plants, establish and maintain plantings.
  • Control invasive plants in support of site and restoration goals.
  • Collect and manage data on species, communities, and restoration and management activities.
  • Support and coordinate the activities of co-workers, volunteers, and cooperators in these areas.
  • Develop clearly written summary reports.
  • Operate and maintain various light vehicles; powered and non-powered watercraft; hand and power tools; and electronic instruments including GPS in performance of duties.

Required Qualifications:

  • Biology course-work.
  • Ability to identify plant or animal species using technical keys and references.
  • Familiarity with spreadsheet and word-processing software.
  • Writing skill.
  • Willingness to work long hours in adverse weather conditions.
  • Operation and care of light vehicles, powered and non-powered watercraft, hand and power tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in pursuing a career in restoration ecology.
  • Declared major in biological science.
  • Familiarity with principles of plant ecology, crop science, horticulture, and/or plant husbandry.
  • Experience collecting, propagating and establishing native plants.
  • Experience with GIS, GPS database software.

Terms of Employment: One half-time AmeriCorps member will serve a 10 month term, starting March 1, 2008 and ending December 31 2008, for a minimum of 900 hours. Work hours and times negotiable when school is in session.

Program Benefits: $6050 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis, a $2,362 education award upon completion of the 900 hours of service. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own housing and food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of both a criminal and a driving background check. Position is dependant on funding.
