Northwest Youth Corps Alumnus Letter

July 24, 2006
An Alumnus Gives Back to His Community

From: David Zahler

NYC: 1986

"Did it all start with Northwest Youth Corps? Maybe-- I suppose something drove me to participate in the first place, but look where I ended up. I went on to complete a BS in Forest Management from Oregon State University, work in forest research for a couple years, complete an MS in Forest Resources from OSU, serve as an agroforestry extension agent in rural Guatemala with the US Peace Corps, then become a senior instructor in the College of Forestry, OSU. And I've stayed active in natural resource management focused non-profits, from OSPIRG in the early 90s to the Corvallis Environmental Center and Oregon Legal Graywater Association most recently. I still reflect fondly on my NYC experience, and I really think that I learned much more than just the benefits of hard work from it. For one thing, I learned about the important role that non-profits play in our communities. For another, I learned how valuable it is to personally give back."
